EMERSON CSI 2140 Machinery Health Analyzer

01 CHALLENGE With over 25 years of experience delivering superior machinery health analysis solutions to their customers, Emerson decided they needed a game-changing portable device that would dramatically raise the high bar set by their industry-standard CSI 2130. Emerson started the process by taking advantage of the latest technologies to create a device that would be clearly more powerful, more flexible and faster than the 2130. They decided very early on to engage with the design team to help them re-imagine the user experience that would complement the advanced technologies they were designing into the product. 02 SOLUTION We employed in-depth user-centric research to develop the foundation for the improved user experience. Backlit buttons are grouped according to priority and functionality to improve usability, even in low-light situations. The CSI 2140 has a redesigned carrying strap that reduces fatigue during all-day use and aids single-hand operation. Special attention was given to the quick release connection points to facilitate quick configuration between users. The detachable accessory holders allow multiple sensors to be carried with the unit while maintaining full button access, whether the CSI 2140 is being carried, laid flat on a table, or propped up on the new, integrated stand. 03 IMPACT The CSI 2140 is the next generation in Emerson’s family of portable machinery health analyzers. The enhanced ergonomic design and user interface improves data collection and allows users to more effectively focus on the task at hand. As maintenance department’s service complex equipment with reduced staff, the ability to collect data for extended periods in many environments helps maximize productivity. By obtaining user insights directly from the source, the design of the CSI 2140 falls directly in line with customer needs and sets a strong example for the value of human centered design.
