ADVANCED PHARMACY Passport Medication Dispensing Center

A fully automated, remotely monitored medication dispensing center for sub-acute nursing environments. After having their first generation PassPort system in the field for over a decade, Advanced Pharmacy (AP) wanted to reduce the frequency of AP service technician visits and improve usability for nurses interacting with the system. The design team performed ride-alongs with AP service techs and research visits to nursing facilities, reviewed field incident data, and conducted ergonomic usability studies to inform the PassPort design changes. We re-designed two critical systems to dramatically increase machine up-time, while improving the user experience when interacting with the machine. The PassPort housing design was also upgraded to facilitate envelope loading by utilizing a “trail of lights” methodology, friendly graphics, and intuitive interaction points. The improved design of the latest generation AP PassPort system has expanded AP’s market presence and allows nurses to focus more on patient care.
